For 99.9 percent of high school volleyball teams, winning a share of a league title as well as a county title would be considered a big year. But for the Caldwell volleyball program, those accolades do not measure up to what the team has done in the recent past. The Chiefs finished with a 10-2 record in the top SEC division, the American, good for a three-way split for the title with Livingston and East Side. The 2010 season finished with a thud at home with a three-set loss to Pascack Hills in the Group 2 North 2 sectional semi-final (25-20, 25-27 and 20-25), ending a string of wins. The …
At the moment, it was very painful for the Caldwell girls soccer team to see Hackettstown screaming for joy in the waning seconds of the Group II North II state final game. Hackettstown's Shannon Browne scored with less than 30 seconds remaining against the Chiefs to end Caldwell's season with a 2-1 loss on the road in the sectional final. The Chiefs had come into the sectional final on fire in winning 10 straight matches, but the momentum did not pull them through to win the sectional title. West Essex girls tennis head coach Barbara Bruchac was on pins and needles before the state tournament seedings came out. The Knights, who received the ninth seed, took that wild card and ran with it as West Essex captured the Group II North II state championship by defeating Madison, 3-2. The Knights were 2-7 at the state cutoff date. A couple of years ago, West Essex had no chance of playing post-…

The team is comprised of three seventh-grade girls and nine eighth-grade girls from Caldwell and West Caldwell, and is sponsored by the West Caldwell Recreation Department. Led by new coach Tracey Tufano, the team had a record of seven wins and one loss, the loss being the first match of the …
