Young voices from the Caldwells share stories, opinions, photographs and art.
Celebrity chef Lucinda Scala Quinn of "Mad Hungry" fame is all about bringing back the family meal. Among the many families across the country taking her message to heart is the Kasbo family of Caldwell. Father Abe recently wrote to the star of Mad Hungry, which airs on Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, explaning how important cooking and eating together are to his family. Lucinda featured their story on her blog on Monday, Oct. 31. But the Kasbos did not stop there. The family created a video starring brother and sister Nicolas and Sofia, second graders at Lincoln School, demonstrating how to…
I can’t say I was Nick’s best friend or that we were even close friends. What I can say is that Nick made an impact on my life. This is something that at this time, so many people are feeling. Nick was always the kid who was smiling, and he, unlike so many, reached and strived as hard as he could for his goals. Needless to say, on October 2, 2011 heaven gained an Angel. I had a few classes with Nick and also had the opportunity to work on projects together. It seems so long ago, but the memories will always remain. Nick was intelligent, he just wasn’t the type to sit still in a classroom, he …
James Caldwell High School’s 2011 Music Department Tour to Orlando was “awesome,” according to senior percussionist Tyler Stone. The trip was hugely anticipated by JCHS music students, who have the opportunity to perform at Disney World once every four years with the JCHS music program. Other years, the Music Department heads to Boston, Virginia and Washington, D.C., offering exciting performances, music workshops, and cultural opportunities at each destination. But senior chorus member Toni Kirbas expressed the feelings of many JCHS seniors when she stated, “There is no better place to end …
Unlike most 6-year-olds my biggest worries weren’t what I was going to do for my birthday or even which teacher I would have next year. No, my care free childhood was corrupted by leukemia. Leukemia and cancer were not words that held much meaning to me, however the reactions of my parents and relatives foreshadowed the long journey I was about to begin to fight against cancer. Instead of the typical school days most kids my age were accustomed to, I spent the majority of my time in the hospital being pricked for blood and given shots of chemotherapy (basically poison). It was the life I grew…
I am a huge fan of ribs. My dad makes some tasty ones and my neighbor has a recipe that is even better. When I heard that a new BBQ place called Hog Wild was opening up on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell, I knew I had to test out their recipe. I wasn’t disappointed, they were the best I ever had. I first tried Hog Wild during the Caldwell Street Fair and then my family went back to order take-out again soon after. While I was there, I asked one of the owners, Drew Daniolowicz, some questions. He told me they opened up the restaurant in October, but he and his brother, Dave, have been in the BBQ…
They played their hearts out all day and all night with the common goal – getting to Disney World. James Caldwell High School's annual all-day Music Marathon on Saturday, March 5, started at 10:30 a.m. with a children's sing along and ended more than 12 hours later with a grande finale at midnight. The program featured musical acts from the high school, as well as a few more from the surrounding area, playing everything from classical to jazz to rock. The music was varied, but the objective of each act was the same – to entertain the community while raising money for the program’s spring trip…
I have wanted to ski ever since my mom told me about it. Over winter recess, I went skiing in this place called Sugarbush, Vt. So if you want to go skiing, I can help you if you read this. First I am going to tell you about how many layers of clothes you have to put on to help keep warm (but sometimes you still get a little snow in your gloves). Like I had to put on pants under snow pants, and I had to put a shirt over another shirt that had to go under a jacket, and long socks. Oh and I had to put a face mask on then my helmet and goggles. It was a lot of clothes, but I was warm! Now I can …
I went to see Justin Bieber’s new movie this week at Clearview’s Caldwell Cinema 4. I have to admit that I wasn’t a big fan of his before this movie. I thought he sounded like a girl and had weird hair. But after seeing this movie, now I love him. Let me tell you about the movie and why I had a change of heart about this teen idol. Justin was born in Toronto, Canada. He was raised by a single mom and his grandparents. For Christmas one year, Justin got a djembe, an African drum. He never had any lessons, but he played like he was born to do it. He also played the guitar, the piano, and could …
