More than 50 young artists had a chance to try a new medium last Friday at the Caldwell Farmers’ Market.   All children were invited to make their own Caldwell Farmers’ Market wall hangings using all natural, vegetable-based paints. The wall hangings were constructed using recycled paper grocery bags, using bamboo sticks and unbleached twine.  In addition to painting, the artists learned how they could make their own paints using beets, carrots, spinach, red cabbage, lemon rinds, sugar and water.   The recipe can be found here for those who couldn’t attend the market.  The project was …
It’s that time of year again when the freshest produce is available right in your back yard. The Caldwell Farmers' Market is back every Friday between noon and 6 p.m. at the Smull Avenue Municipal Parking lot until Oct. 24. This year’s market promises to get bigger and better every week, with returning old favorites and quality newcomers. From Iona Farms’ famous tomatoes to Jaker’s Pickles or Snoep Winkel Farm’s quality meats, there are a variety of options for anyone seeking fresh goods. It’s all part of an effort by Project Main Street to give local businesses places to show their wares and…
“The business is multi-faceted,” said Dave Chalek, the man behind Sprout Food and Farm’s mission to bring fresh, local, sustainable produce to the area—not just in the summertime but year-round. This soon-to-be Verona resident plans to operate a produce market in the retail space in the front of the property located at 82 Pine St. while maintaining a greenhouse in back. He'll also be running his current landscape design and organic garden care business out of the location, and he’ll do it all seven days a week, 365 days a year. For local residents and restaurants this means access to fresh, …
Some Project Main Street volunteers roll up their sleeves to work on community projects. Others donate their professional services to help the organization meet its goals. Caldwell resident and designer Carolynn O’Brien does both. Not only has O’Brien helped plant and mulch trees along Bloomfield Avenue and worked on the annual Beautification Dinner, but the owner of The Graphics Connection, Inc., is also responsible for the beautiful new Caldwell Farmers’ Market banners that will soon hang throughout the downtown. Each banner design features an original illustration of a seasonal vegetable. …
The Caldwell Farmers Market won’t resume for several more months, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have the local hormone-, steroid- and antibiotic-free meat and eggs you came to love over the summer. During the off-season, Snoep Winkel Farm, a popular vendor at the Caldwell Farmers Market, makes monthly deliveries to Caldwell on the second Saturday of every month. The next delivery is scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 14. A farm truck will come to the Caldwell market site, the municipal parking lot behind Clearview Caldwell Cinema, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. “We don't set up like the typical summer …
You could say Snoep Winkel Farm started out as a 4-H project. Although at the time the owners were simply looking to enroll their children in a wholesome activity. Unlike most who fall for a couple of cute baby bunnies and some fuzzy chicks, the family wound up with a whole stable of farm animals.  The Van Boerums harbored no secret desires to become farmers, but the more they and their sons learned about conventional industry methods of raising cattle through the 4-H Club the more they realized they wanted to eat healthier, naturally produced meat. So they sold their home in a suburban New …
Stony Hill Gardens and Farm Market has been in business for 25 years, but owner Carol Davis’s love affair with farm life started long before that. For a kid born and raised – at least the early part of her life – in Newark, N.J., Davis had country in her blood.  As a young child Davis and her siblings would spend every summer at her uncle’s farm in Pennsylvania, and that’s where her heart remained. Those experiences, Davis said, “made me love farming.”    When the kids returned home to Newark, Davis said she and her siblings would lobby their father for a farm. In 1966 when Davis was nine-…
Hoboken Farms may have neither produce nor farmland, but it is a veteran of the farmers market scene. Playing with irony, owner Brad Finkel combined the name of his hometown, where most of his products come from, with “farm” for the markets where he sold them, and he had a name for his business, which he started nearly 20 years ago in another ironic circumstance. Finkel was working as a gourmet foods distributor back then when one of his customers asked him to join a farmers market. Although Finkel didn’t know what a farmers market was, he agreed anyway. Now, two decades later he has cornered…
Although Maria Lange started her business, Maria’s Biscotti, just four years ago, she has been making biscotti “for a very long time.” Ever since she was a young girl watching her mother bake in the kitchen, actually. As a kid, Lange doesn’t remember a week going by without her mother baking for family and friends. With all the work that went into it, Lange’s mother recruited her to be an assistant. Back then, Lange recalled, she was just in it to see “who would get to lick the mixing bowl before it went into the sink.” But Lange grew to share her mother’s passion and carried on the tradition…
Ever since he was a little kid working in his father’s bakery, Paolo Vieira has been cooking. But it took 20 years working professionally in the industry before his friends and family convinced him to bring his cooking directly to the people. He finally did in 2008 when he opened his catering business, Paolo’s Kitchen, with his wife, Paula. After quickly making a name for themselves in their New Providence community, the couple started branching out to bring their fresh, rustic Italian dishes to towns across New Jersey.   “We do everything by hand,” said Paula Vieira, who noted while she …
Mixed in among the mounds of Jersey fresh fruits and vegetables you’ll find a mix of another sort entirely. A nut mix. Lots of them, actually. This year for the first time you can snack as you select your produce at the Caldwell Farmers' Market. Gourmet Nuts & Dried Fruit LLC has set up shop there, offering 50 different types of products from dried figs to candied nuts and brittles. Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet or salty or even a little bit spicy, the stand's got you covered. “We certainly have the variety,” said Caryn Feldman who acts as the marketing manager for her son’s …
Fontanarosa’s Gourmet Specialty Foods might not have “farm” in its name, but it definitely deserves its spot at the table. In true farmers’ market style, owner Anthony Fontanarosa works with local farmers and merchants to get the freshest ingredients to make his tender, doughy pasta, light, fluffy gnocchi and 60 different types of ravioli.  “We try to do everything as local as we can,” said Fontanarosa, who buys his dairy products locally as well. “We try to stay sustainable.” And, he works with the harvest of the moment to create his myriad combinations of seasonal ravioli fillings. “Last …
While Jersey fresh corn, kale and cucumbers are certainly reason enough to venture to the Caldwell Farmers’ Market, collectively the vendors present practically an entire meal. Stop at Hoboken Farms for organic free-range chicken, aged sirloin steak burgers or the “world’s best” crab cakes. This stand, anchored by a sandwich shop in Summit, has focused on farmers’ markets since 1992 and visits over 30 markets in the area. Their Big Red marinara sauce recently won recognition as the best on the market by the Wall Street Journal. The acclaimed sauce is brought direct to Caldwell each Friday and…
Grey skies and intermittent mist couldn’t keep the crowds from the Caldwell Farmers’ Market last Friday, June 24, when it opened for it’s third season. Councilman Doug Piazza, who doubles as the Market Manager, said residents have been asking for months when the farmers’ market was going to open. When the day finally came, eager fans didn't let a little cloudy weather get between them and farm fresh fruits and vegetables. Immediately following its 2:00 p.m. start in the Smull Avenue municipal parking lot, located behind the Caldwell Cinema, the market saw a steady stream of patrons browsing …
