NJ Spotlight Map: How Does Essex Stack Up With Recycling?

Data shows Essex County staying even with recycling, while many counties are recycling less waste than in mid-1990s.

Residents in Essex County are doing a pretty good job recycling their waste. In a county where 1.57 million tons of waste was generated, 61.6 percent was recycled, according to NJ Spotlight's latest interactive map. Overall, New Jerseyans are recycling less of their waste than they did in the mid-1990s, data from the state Department of Environmental Protection show. At the peak, residents across the state were recycling 61 percent of what they discarded in 1996 and 1997. That number dropped to 57 percent statewide in 2009. Prior to the enactment of the state’s mandatory recycling law a quarter of a century ago, 10 percent or less of waste was recycled. The law initially set a goal of recycling 25 percent of the municipal solid waste …

'Jerseylicious' Just Got Bigger

Anthony Robert Salon opens in spacious, new Verona venue.

Things are relatively quiet at 279 Bloomfield Ave. in Verona, the new home of Jerseylicious reality star Anthony Lombardi’s salon, but that’s just because they’re still settling in. This week is the salon’s soft opening, with a grand opening in the works for next month. The sleek new space was a big undertaking for Lombardi, who has just about quadrupled his size from the tiny, four-chair salon he first opened in Verona six years ago. And, as with all construction projects, this one wasn’t quite completed by the time Lombardi had hoped. He planned on opening in April. When asked to describe how the transition went, the ever-energetic and optimistic Lombardi said, “So far, so good.” But he admitted he’s still “trying to figure out where …

Steaks and More at DelMonico and Beyond

Bobby Wong chats about the Cedar Grove restaurant he co-owns with actor James Gandolfini.

Editor's Note: In an earlier version of this story appearing on several Patch sites, we reported Rare, located at 440 Main St. in Little Falls, was out of business. The steakhouse is open and accepting reservations. Patch regrets the error. Approaching its two-year anniversary this September, DelMonico Steak & Beyond has established itself as the go-to place in Cedar Grove. That’s because owner Bobby Wong carefully considered the location, the community and the residents. “I think about the people,” Wong said of his plans for the space when he bought it in 2010. Formerly Jim Dandy’s Rib Joint, the restaurant Wong had envisioned was utterly different. He designed a restaurant that would suit the needs of the community. “When the space …

Atomic Wings Delivered to Your Doorstep

Popular New York franchise partners with Montclair's CAR's Delivery.

Atomic Wings, New York’s buffalo chicken wings franchise, has partnered with CAR’s Delivery, the late-night sandwich restaurant at 150 Valley Road in Montclair, to create its first location outside of New York. According to a press release, Adam Lippin was a college freshman knee-deep in the snow of upstate New York, with a bucket of chicken wings in his arms, when he dreamed of bringing authentic Buffalo wings back home with him to New York City. "His passion for fresh wings and great flavor blossomed into the city’s most widely-recognized chicken wings franchise, Atomic Wings. More than twenty years (and thirteen locations) later, Lippin’s dream has come true," the release said. Atomic Wings now stretches throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, …

Que Viva Cinco de Mayo!

Gab your sombrero and prepare to party this Saturday, May 5.

Cue the mariachi band music, put on that sombrero, and grab yourself a handful of tortilla chips—Cinco de Mayo is here. This Saturday marks the celebration of Cinco de Mayo- which translates to “5th of May”—a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, observed in parts of Mexico and the United States. Often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo is actually a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, a hard-won victory by the outnumbered Mexican militia over French forces in 1862, according to History.com. But here in New Jersey, Cinco de Mayo is a good excuse for some music, dancing and food. Bars and restaurants throughout our area will be joining in the fun, with live bands, food and drink specials, and parties. Read on for…

Business owners are encouraged to claim listings in Patch Places—it's basically a free web page on Patch to help you promote your business.

Before Caldwells Patch launched in December 2009, editors and freelancers ventured to local businesses to collect information for our directory. Now, more than two years later, Patch Places is a spot on the site where users can find everything from descriptions, hours, accepted payment methods, and much more about businesses and restaurants in the Caldwells. All users can add events taking place at local places, rate business on a scale of one to five stars, and even add a review. But owners of local businesses get extra bonuses when they claim their listing. Owners or managers should search for their business listing and select "claim you listing" in order to make updates to the page. A form will pop up asking for your name, contact …
