They are: Thomas Haversang, a senior from Roseland who is treasurer for the National Honor Society and received a 4.85 GPA last semester, for academics; Geena Martorana, a junior from Fairfield, and a musician and singer, who was just selected for the North Jersey Region 1 Choir, for the arts; Daniel Kenny, a junior from North Caldwell, who is captain of the men's cross country team, for athletics; Nicholas Soriano, a senior from North Caldwell, who is the student council president and an officer in the National Honor Society and English National Honor Society and goalie for the varsity soccer team, for leadership and Nicole Lieb, a junior from North Caldwell, who volunteers with underprivileged children in West Orange and with the youth group at her synagogue, for service to the community.
Each marking period, Suda asks high school staff to nominate students for the Shop-Rite Stars program recognizing their accomplishments in academics, the arts, athletics, leadership and service to the community. Each student winner will have their photograph displayed in the High School main office and in the West Caldwell Shop-Rite. Shop-Rite will also make a $1,000 award towards Project Graduation.
The program was created by Mr. Ned Gladstein, the owner of Shop-Rite in West Caldwell in 1999 to recognize the accomplishments of West Essex High School students. The program has continued with much success.
