West Caldwell Resident Enlightened His Mo-Beard Students About the Value of Volunteering

During the 11 years he taught science at Morristown-Beard School in Morristown, Bill Lamson, a resident of West Caldwell, spent every Monday afternoon bringing a group of seven students to the Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack to help out with recreation therapy activities and to interact socially with Matheny patients and students. The Mo-Beard volunteers rotated from a group of approximately 75.

In addition to this regular routine, Lamson also galvanized his students to volunteer and raise money to support Miles for Matheny, the annual fundraiser and community event held every April. Last year, despite the rain and wind, more than 20 Mo-Beard students served as walking partners in the Lu Huggins Wheelchair Walk. Matheny is a special hospital and educational facility for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities.

Lamson is now retired, but he visited Matheny one last time on Monday, January 7, with some of his students, to enjoy a thank you party organized by coordinator of volunteer activities Gail Cunningham and volunteer assistant David Curcio. They presented him with several mementoes of his time at Matheny including photos, press clips and one more Miles for Matheny t-shirt to add to his collection.

What an outstanding commitment to community service! Mr. Lamson's students will remember their days spent with the Matheny patients and students forever. Thank you for letting the public know about Mo-Beard's special program and Mr. Lamson's involvement.

Matheny's annual fundraiser and community event, Miles for Matheny, is scheduled for Sunday, April 21. This is an event, as you know, supported by Mo-Beard students, but we welcome participation by others in the community as well.
