Chances are you interviewed for a job or perhaps have done the interviewing.
Getting the interview is usually a result of a good resume. And a good resume usually means you have proficient experience that matches the job you are applying for. When applying for a job as an executive, manager or president, usually leadership in your experience is paramount.
I can’t imagine large corporations or business’ hiring anyone for such high level positions that didn’t qualify for the job. These candidates for the job always have leadership experience, either on a level equal to or just lower than the position he or she is applying for. Makes sense, right?
Let’s take that same logic and apply it to the highest, toughest job in America, the President of the United States. It shouldn’t surprise you that only 3 U.S. presidents in the past 180 years have neither military leadership experience nor governorship. The three are Hoover, Harding and Obama.
Why did I single out military leadership and governorship? Well it’s pretty simple and goes back to what I was saying before. A governor has experience as the chief executive running a state. And military experience tests your leadership in the most extreme conditions whether it’s training or combat. There is a reason why tons of military recruitment firms are trying to lure ex-military members to leadership positions in the business world. Not to mention one of the most important jobs as president is Commander In Chief, the leader of the military.
Jumping from having zero leadership experience to the president has not worked. On the job training for such a jump obviously has not worked. As president you are expected to lead and make decisions. Some people are just not leaders. And when it comes to the President of the United States, I want him or her to have the best resumé. Let’s not take another gamble on someone who just speaks well and has no resumé.
This country needs proven leadership as a governor, executive or former military leader. And while congressmen and women have experience in politics, they usually just don’t have the leadership experience as an executive. At such a desperate time, who would you hire?
This country needs a “doer” and someone who is going to lead it. Hope only gets us so far.
