Lauryn Hill Sentencing Postponed

Multiple Grammy winner's sentencing adjourned to May 6. Singer did not pay taxes on three years' worth of earnings.

Sentencing in the federal tax evasion case against singer Lauryn Hill, who rose to fame as part of The Fugees and for her 1998 solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was adjourned Monday until May 6 after a dispute arose over how much she actually owes.  The 37-year-old singer and South Orange resident pleaded guilty in June 2012 to failing to pay taxes on $1.8 million in income earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The eight-time Grammy winner earned most of that income from music and film royalties and also owned at least four businesses.   Sitting in Newark federal court, Judge Madeline Cox Arleo took Hill to task for failing to pay off the more than $500,000 in federal taxes she owes despite earlier promises to do so before her …

Black Maria Film Festival Stops in Caldwell Saturday

Festival takes its name from first motion picture studio built by Thomas Edison.

The Black Maria Film & Video Festival returns to Caldwell on Saturday, April 20. The festival will be held once again at Caldwell Flowerland, 329 Bloomfield Ave., at 4:30 p.m. The Black Maria takes its name from the first motion picture studio designed and built by Thomas Edison in 1893.  The 90-minute program will feature a selection of this year’s winners of short international films with commentary by a festival spokesperson. Tickets are $12 each and are available in advance at Flowerland as well as at the door on the day of the event. Festival goers can receive a 20 percent discount on dinner by showing their movie ticket at Cedar Grill, The Cloverleaf Tavern, Ocha Sushi and Hog Wild BBQ. The event is sponsored by the Caldwell …

Young Adult Lock-In: Les Miserables

Students in grades 6 through 9 invited to spring break lock-in at Caldwell Public Library.

The Caldwell Public Library is hosting a Young Adult Lock-In for students in grades 6 through 9 during spring break on Monday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m.  At the lock-in, the library will show the critically acclaimed film set during the French Revolution, Les Miserables, and serve French refreshments. The musical drama based on Victor Hugo's novel includes Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried.  Jailed for stealing a loaf of bread, Prisoner 24601 (Jean Valjean) is released on parole after a 19-year sentence. County Honors Caldwells Student Artists

Trinity Academy, West Essex High School artwork displayed in Newark's Hall of Records as part of Art Educators of New Jersey exhibit.

Artwork from five students at Caldwell’s Trinity Academy and three West Essex High School students recently graced the first-floor lobby of Newark’s Hall of Records as part of the Art Educators of New Jersey student art exhibit, county officials announced. On March 19, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. and the Art Educators of New Jersey welcomed a total of 75 students for the ninth consecutive year from throughout the county, who range in age from elementary to high school students. Former Washington Student Publishes Book About Penguins (Video)

Melissa Guion was clearly tickled to be back at her childhood library Wednesday reading to a roomful of pre-schoolers.  The author and illustrator of the newly released Baby Penguins Everywhere (Philomel, 2012) told the curious young readers how she grew up in West Caldwell and attended Washington Elementary School. She said she played on the playground there and planned to drive by after the program to see if it still looked like she remembered. Baby Penguins Everywhere is Guion's first book in a three-book contract with Philomel, an imprint of Penguin Books. It was selected for The Original Art 2012 exhibition at the Society of Illustrators.  The book tells the story of a lonely penguin who comes upon a magical top hat. When the penguin …

'Baby Penguins Everywhere' Author Returns to Childhood Library

Author/illustrator Melissa Guion will read her book at the West Caldwell Public Library Wednesday.

Author/illustrator Melissa Guion will return to her childhood library Wednesday to read from her new book, Baby Penguins Everywhere.  Guion will be reading and talking to children at the West Caldwell Public Library at 4 p.m. In addition to Baby Penguins Everywhere, which was selected for The Original Art 2012 exhibition at the Society of Illustrators, she will read other penguin books and children will create a penguin craft.  “I can remember going there as a little girl, it's going to be crazy to go back as an author,” Guion posted on her Facebook page. “I wonder if they'll make me pay my fines?” Baby Penguins Everywhere is Guion’s first book.
