Event celebrates its 30th season.
When is a balloon festival not (just) a balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park, with a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets …

Talent contest expanded; DVD submissions due by June 1.
Montville Township's "Summer Idol" will be back this summer, but this year, the contest has been expanded to include contestants from surrounding towns. Now, contestants from Livingston, Caldwell, Boonton, Parsippany and other municipalities are invited to join in on the singing and dancing fun. "This is the third year we're doing it and basically, it's a competition more like 'America's Got Talent' than 'American Idol' because we include dancers," said Dorie Berman, who is coordinating the contest. Berman said contestants are asked to submit a DVD or video of their talent for review. Videos are to be submitted by a deadline of June 1, at which point 24 finalists will be chosen to perform the Thursday prior to the Independence Day …

Documentary filmmaker speaks to sold-out audience on final day of Montclair Film Festival.
During the final day of the inaugural Montclair Film Festival, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore chatted for about an hour about two of his favorite topics, movies and politics—left-leaning politics, to be specific. Moore was clearly in his element in Montclair, a town 12-miles west of New York City known for embracing diversity, the arts and Democratic politicians. So imagine the jeers from the sold-out audience at the Montclair Art Museum when Moore proclaimed, “To be honest, I don’t know the difference between this or Morristown.” Moore, wearing his signature baseball cap, quickly bounced back by relating how he once ran a campaign for a ficus tree, challenging longtime U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, a member of what he called the …

Amy Chiarello Barnett writes about one of the top 10 greatest nights of her life
I have always loved the music of “The Boss” although I cannot take credit for being one of “those” fans. The die hards who know every album, can argue song lyrics and set lists and tour dates and such. But I am a born and bred Jersey girl, and when our most famous native plays his premier gig in the largest city in the state, (not to mention in our own Essex County backyard,) ... well, attention must be paid. On Wednesday night, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played for the first time at the Prudential Center in Newark. And I was there. My invitation to last night’s show came via my well-connected friend Kathy. Her late night text message asking “What are you doing tomorrow night?” set into motion one of the Top Ten All Time …
