Board of Ed. Supports Nixing Superintendent Salary Cap, Relay For Life, Gas Leak Top News This Week

These stories made headlines in the Caldwells this past week.

The Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education will join other school districts in opposing the salary cap Gov. Chris Christie placed on superintendents.  The Caldwell Police Department launched a crackdown on drivers who failed to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks this past weekend. Local editor Teresa Akersten stepping down to cover Montclair for Patch. Hundreds of people gathered on James Caldwell High School's Bonnel Field Friday, May 10, to join the fight against cancer.  A gas line was ruptured early Friday morning on Fairmount Road, evacuating two homes, according to West Caldwell Police. Women's Club Student Art Contest Now Accepting Submissions

The local contest with Grover Cleveland Park as its theme will run in conjunction with the Caldwell Merchants Association's Art on the Avenue on June 1.

Women's Club of Caldwell is now taking submissions for its Student Art Contest that will take place during Art on the Avenue on June 1.  The art contest is for students in kindergarten through grade 12 and entries will be accepted through May 23. Only one submission per student is permitted. The theme of the contest will be Grover Cleveland Park in celebration of the park's 100th anniversary. All student entries must use the park as its overall theme.   The contest is for two-dimensional art only, and the medium is limited to drawing, illustration and painting. No photographs or copyrighted images will be accepted.  Student submission must be limited to 9 by 12 inches, and must be mounted on cardboard, matte board or foam core.  Entries …

First Baptist Church to Take Part in Caldwell Beautification Day

Volunteers will meet at 'The Green' next to Caldwell Library starting at 8:30 a.m. and clean up Bloomfield Avenue Saturday.

When Project Main Street invited members of the community to roll up their sleeves to help clean up Bloomfield Avenue this Saturday, The First Baptist Church of Caldwell was one of the first organization's to volunteer.   Members of the congregation will be helping to beautify downtown Caldwell by planting a garden in front of the church and joining Project Main Street volunteers on other projects planned for the day. Report: Lauryn Hill to Perform Tuesday in Brooklyn

South Orange resident to sing, rap in concert featuring her new song, "Neurotic Society Compulsory Mix," at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Singer, songwriter Lauryn Hill, the South Orange resident and former Fugee who must soon surrender for a three-month prison term for failing to pay taxes on $2.3 million in income over a five-year span, will perform Tuesday, May 14 in Brooklyn, a published report Monday said. Hill, who was sentenced on Monday, May 6 for tax evasion, will sing and rap at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, according to the NJ.com report. Tickets to the show are $85 in advance and $100 at the door, the report said, and VIP “meet and greet” passes may be purchased for $200. The NJ.com report said Hill took to Twitter to give her rationale for scheduling a last-minute show – citing an opportunity to perform "Neurotic Society Compulsory Mix," her recently released …

'Tanning Mom' To Appear in Gay Porn

The curiously hued Nutley resident continues to make headlines.

Sources close to “Tanning Mom” Patricia Krentcil told celebrity gossip site TMZ that the Nutley woman would be featured in a soon-to-be released gay porn film. The sources then qualified the revelation: Krentcil would be working fully clothed and she won’t partake in any sexual activities. The 45-year-old mother will get $1,000 for the cameo role, said sources. Earlier this year, the mother of five recorded her debut rap single at a New York recording studio and posed topless on a Jersey Shore beach. Krentcil's infamy began in April 2012 when school officials noticed burns on her daughter's leg and reported the injuries to authorities. Caldwell's Art on the Avenue Upcoming

The Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy will sponsor a booth featuring local artists' work featuring the Caldwells' most famous park.

Bloomfield Avenue will be transformed into an art gallery on June 1 for Caldwell's Art on the Avenue.  The Caldwell Merchants Association will be holding the event on Bloomfield Avenue between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, June 1, which will feature local artists' paintings, sculptures, photography and more. Michael Moore Talks 'Dangerous Docs' at Montclair Film Festival

Outspoken filmmaker returns to Montclair, will break ground on first documentary-only theater in New York City this week.

Michael Moore worries about a lot of things, from America’s health care system, to gun violence to what he considers the questionable virtues of capitalism. The outspoken documentary filmmaker also frets about the future of his genre, which he has used to shed light on those and other issues in such films as “Sicko,” “Bowling for Columbine” and “Capitalism: A Love Story.” Moore discussed how he hopes to revive the genre, and whether films can really change the world, as moderator of “Dangerous Docs,” a Montclair Film Festival panel discussion held at the Montclair Art Museum Sunday.  The Oscar winner is known for using humor to get his point across, and he began the talk drawing laughs declaring, “I hate documentaries.” Moore said …
