What Happened on This Day in 1995?
Jan. 26 marks anniversary of a bit of Caldwell trivia. Plus, a look ahead at the many notable anniversaries happening in 2012.
Here's a bit of Caldwell trivia. Between 1981 and early 1995, the town was officially called the "Township of the Borough of Caldwell."
The name changed back to the "Borough of Caldwell" on this day, Jan. 26, in 1995. The clunky name change in the 1980s was done to “take advantage of federal revenue sharing policies," according to Caldwell’s Wikipedia page.
Caldwell has an even bigger anniversary coming up next month—the borough was incorporated 120 years ago on Feb. 10, 1892. Although no official celebration has been announced, Caldwell Mayor Ann Dassing said at a council meeting earlier this month it’s time to start thinking about how to mark the town’s 125th anniversary in 2017.
Meanwhile, many big anniversaries will be marked in some way or another in 2012:
- Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church in West Caldwell turns 50.
- The North Caldwell Baseball/Softball organization is also marking 50 years.
- The West Essex First Aid Squad, founded in 1937, is marking its 75th anniversary and plans a community-wide celebration later in the year.
- Congregation Agudath Israel of West Essex celebrates 90 years in Caldwell. Patch recently ran an old postcard of the synagogue's original home on Washburn Place.
- The West Caldwell Fire Department celebrates its centennial; it will also have a new firehouse when renovations are completed later in the year.
- Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell is also celebrating its centennial. The club will host the USGA Senior Amateur Golf Championship Sept. 29 through Oct. 4.
- It's 200 years since the War of 1812, and the Historical Society of West Caldwell is in the process of restoring a flag from that period flown by the Caldwell Calvary Unit.
Coming up in 2013: The 100th anniversary of Essex County's Grover Cleveland Park. The Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy has a celebration in the works which will take place, of course, in the park.

UPDATE: Learned this week that the Grover Cleveland Birthplace will celebrate U.S. President Grover Cleveland's 175th birthday in 2012. Cleveland was born on March 18, 1837. Also, the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association turns 100 in 2013. I can't resist local trivia!
