New Jerseyans have discovered that the New York Police Department spent several months conducting surveillance of mosques and businesses, including eateries, that were owned by Muslims during 2007.
The Associated Press reported that the NYPD conducted surveillance on everything from houses of worship to chicken restaurants in Newark. Civil rights groups and politicians have called for an investigation by the state Attorney General's Office. And police and state officials have said they did not know the request by the police department would reach this far.
Was this surveillance the actions of an overzealous police department? Or simply an anti-terrorism measure designed to keep New Jersey safe from attacks?
