Updated: Westville Pool to Open Thursday and Friday
National Weather Service has issued heat advisory for Northeast New Jersey. Temperatures expected to reach high 90s Wednesday and Thursday.
Updated Wednesday, June 20 at 1:20 p.m.
At 1:15 p.m., it's in the low 90s and climbing in the Caldwells, where temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s Wednesday and Thursday.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon Wednesday to 8 p.m. Thursday for Northeast New Jersey and surrounding areas.
According to an advisory issued by the North Caldwell Police Department, “Residents are advised to hydrate, stay cool, avoid exertion, and check on others.”
To help residents cool off, the West Caldwell Recreation Department will open Westville Pool from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and again on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to director Gabe DiMasi.
The National Weather Service advises rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening, wearing light and loose-fitting clothing and drinking plenty of water.
The heat index will make it feel like it’s 100 to 104 degrees, resulting in dangerous conditions for those spending long periods of time outside.
This article will be updated as more information comes in regarding the extreme heat.

Rumor has it that they are banning swimmies or any other floatations devices in the big pools. If this is true, it's going to be a rough trip to the pool for parents with kids at different swim abilities. Personally I think it's a bad decision.

I agree, Frank, as one of those parents. Can we write a letter to the editor with the names of any parents who disagree and pressure them to change the policy. (Last year it was okay, but suddenly this year not?)

I just picked up my third grader from school and she was dripping with sweat. She informed me that they were outside this afternoon on the blacktop for 1 1/2 hrs!!!! There is a heat advisory in effect.. was this a wise decision??????

I attended the West Caldwell Council meeting last night. Yes, Sheila you are right. The reason Westville will not open until 4 p.m. tomorrow is because of the scheduled 8th grade pool party celebrating their promotion from GCMS. Cedar Street is not open due to swim team practice for the summer recreation Dolphins swim team and the Cougar Aquatics team that rents the pool during off hours.

Hi Ellen-
Did they mention a compromise on the swimmy rule when you were at the meeting last night? When I asked at the last meeting, they said they would discuss and come up with something, to be announced at last night's meeting, but I could not attend.
Thanks!
