I remember lying awake listening to a stream of profanity as “Santa” assembled it on Christmas Eve.

Many great toys require complex assembly, I have to agree a bike always brings a big smile ! And the unpacking and endless tie downs !

"...And the LEGO Friends line appeals to girls as well."

Wow. Are there any other women on here that never realized that LEGOs was a 'boy's toy'?

My other two favorites as a child were Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs. I recently saw a Craiglist ad for someone selling a K'nex set and thought about buying it - definitely for a child...not for me, I swear. ;-)

Don't worry Nancy, I understood your comment. I don't know about you, but I would have loved a chemistry set as a kid - I could have gotten a jump start on my career! Have a good holiday season everyone!

My brother and I used to always like the Scouting stuff we got, backpacks, sleeping bags, cooking kits, pocket knives.
When I was 10 I got my own bicycle , one that wasn't handed down. I loved that bike. 52 years later and I am still riding bicycles.
My brother got a baseball glove, he still has it on a shelf, he treated it with Neetsfoot Oil and wrapped it around a ball with rubber bands to form a pocket
Lionel trains, erector sets, the visible man, the visible V8.
Nice memories even though the parents of our large family had to skrimp on everything all year long, they made Christmas special and they were depression era raised.
