A 19-year-old from North Caldwell attending Rutgers University in Newark was arrested Tuesday night after potentially dangerous materials were allegedly discovered in his dorm room, according to university officials.

The student, Elan “Eli” Haba, a sophomore at Rutgers-Newark, faces multiple charges. Specific information about the materials allegedly found in Haba’s dorm room and exact charges were not immediately available.

A campus spokesperson said Wednesady authorities at the University of South Dakota tipped off Rutgers University Campus Police, saying a student from their school with alleged connections to Haba was in possession of suspicious materials.

Students from University Square, Woodward Hall and Talbott Hall were evacuated Tuesday night around 9 p.m. while the Essex County Bomb Squad and the Newark Police Special Operations Division conducted the operation. According to NJ.com, students were released from the various areas on campus where they were held by 10:45 p.m.

“Everyone in our university community should understand that we are handling this situation with the well being and safety of everyone foremost in our minds,” stated Kemel Dawkins, Executive Vice Chancellor of Rutgers-Newark, in a message sent to the university community.

According to his Facebook page, Haba is studying chemical engineering at Rutgers-Newark. He is a graduate of West Essex High School in North Caldwell.
