Rose Mediterranean Restaurant Closes

Popular Caldwell eatery went out of business this week.

One of the Caldwells' most popular eateries, Rose Mediterranean Restaurant, closed its doors this week.

A message posted on Rose's Facebook page Friday morning says, "It is with great regret that we have to inform you that Rose closed on Thursday. We want to thank all our guests for your friendship and loyalty. We will miss you all very much!"

Chef/Owner Joe Albergo opened Rose in late 2010, offering dishes that showcased his multiple influences including the cooking of his Neopolitan grandmother, Rose, who taught him to cook as a boy.

The New York Times gave the restaurant a "Worth It" rating in May, along with a glowing review in the N.Y./Region section.

Pastry Chef Katy Sheehan's chocolate lava cake and blueberry cobbler were praised by the reviewer.

On Friday morning, there was nothing posted in the Bloomfield Avenue restaurant's window indicating that it has closed. But a sticker from Open Table recognized the restaurant as a Winner of 2012 Diners' Choice awards.

Are you surprised? Saddened? Or maybe you always meant to try it but never had a chance. Tell us in the comments.

I wanted to try Rose ever since it opened, but every time we made plans to go, my wife would get sick at the last minute. . . I'm very sad about this. It's bad enough that the community can't support retail stores on Bloomfield Ave. . . now restaurants, too? About 20 years ago, when we still had actual stores in town, Dave Dancy (former mayor and councilman) told me that the day was coming when Bloomfield Ave. would be nothing but beauty parlors, nail salons and restaurants. Well, he was pretty close.

Have eaten there a few times and always found it to be a pleasant experience.Perhaps they have become another victim of our economy, that coupled with extremely high rent increases-a friend of mine has an establishment on the Avenue-so I'm familiar. It's always a shame to see any establishment close.May they have good luck in their next endeavor. Respectfully,Gregory L.Mitchell

Nice guy, but what a bizarre menu? I went there probable 10 times and never saw anyone ordering all that smelly (in my opinion) middle eastern food. Dont think there is much of a demand for curry-type foods in the Caldwells. Plus parking is limited.

Wow! Excellent food and I was just about to book a large group there because it always had excellent food, but no crowd at lunch. The only issue was trying to find parking, especially if you planned to bring a group.

OMG I am so sorry to hear this. Rose was a great resturant with very good food. It's really getting to be a shame that so many resturants are closing. We need a change in this economy thats for sure.

We are so sorry to hear that Rose has closed! It is one of our favorite restaurants with the eclectic menu, ambiance and great Staff,Not to mention,Joe the owner/chef and Katie the pastry chef are friendly and so talented!Maybe there is a chance it will reopen??
Caldwell needs to start supporting the small business in town, and help them to survive or it's going to be a long line of closed stores and restaurants up and down Bloomfield Ave.Michelle and Paul Wurzel

NOOOOOO. I just found this gem in July 2012 and had been back several times. I went for lunch on 9/30 and found it closed...I almost cried! RIP Rose Mediterranean!

I never ate there but I did feel that their business sense was a bit odd. I wanted to have a party there that would total @ $800. They wanted a $500 cash deposit. I thought it sounded fishy and didn't have the party. I did heAr the food was delicious!

Thank God you didn't. I did put a deposit on my husband's 50th party and they never even called to let me know that they closed down. I went there in Sept. to do the menu and the doors were locked. What a shock! The town doesn't say much. Very disappointed.

Rose was one of my favorite restaurants. Eating there was always a special experience. They made the best rack of lamb there. I sincerely hope you will relocate in this area again soon.
