Readers Name Nicco's Favorite Deli

Results of this week's Readers' Choice poll.

All signs point to Nicco's. The Caldwell deli was the clear winner of this week's poll which asked readers, what's your favorite deli?

And, if you have been by Nicco's on Bloomfield Avenue, you know there are a lot of signs in the Italian deli's window. One says they are open until 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday nights. Another reminds passersby that they serve hot breakfast daily, including eggs with Taylor ham and cheese, Italian sausage or sausage and peppers. Then there are the signs that indicate they serve up "famous soups" and point drivers to parking in the rear. Finally, the awning reads "Dinners to Go — We Deliver."

Two of three reviewers on Nicco's listing page give the eatery high-praise. Here's some of what they had to say.

"I Love the food! Always fresh and Nicco makes it anyway you want."—Scott Erichsen

"I have not had anything bad from Nicco's and always recomend his deli. He is the king of working man sandwiches and food."—Peter Boeck

The problem with these "readers' surveys" is that they're impossible to monitor. Anyone can vote every time they log on. The results are meaningless. Take the sushi poll for example. Nori won, despite the fact that there never seems to be anyone in there, while Ocha, which I believe came in third, is always busy. I personally don't care for sushi, so it's not as if "my place" didn't win; I'm just pointing out that any interested in "stuffing the ballot box" can do so, and nobody can stop them. A better indicator of how the public feels about a place is Yelp.

I agree. These surveys are useless, perhaps even ridiculous. Instead of pitting one place against another, shouldn't Patch find ways to encourage us to support ALL of our local places? The winners are too often the places that aggressively solicited votes from friends and relatives.

Nicco's has been closed for over a month now. Not sure if it is permanent or temporary.

Just heard that Nicco's will reopen on Monday, August 13. It will be great to have him back.

I like Nicco's also, love it in fact, too bad the parking was removed from the front of the store and across the street and the parking lot behind the are is so limited and hardly ever has an opening. And too bad that the traffic is worse than ever at that intersection. I am sure all the businesses there were hurt.
