Purses Nabbed from Cars in Pool Lot

West Caldwell Police investigating multiple car burglaries.

Several women had their purses stolen while they were parked at a West Caldwell town pool Friday afternoon.

The burglar or burglars smashed the windows of four cars parked at the Westville Pool between 1:45 and 3:15 p.m., according to the West Caldwell Police.

A pocketbook was nabbed from each of the cars. The purses contained cash, credit cards, driver’s licenses and other personal items, police said.

The victims are women from West Caldwell, Roseland, Fairfield and East Hanover.

All four cars were parked in the same area of the Westville Avenue lot.

Police said a local church group that had been handing out flyers in the lot Friday was investigated but no connection was found to the car burglaries.

The burglaries remain under investigation and police will be patrolling the lots more often while the pool is open.

West Caldwell Police Chief Michael Bramhall warned, “When leaving valuables in a car, make every attempt to conceal them."

Anyone who thinks they saw something or someone suspicious in the pool lot yesterday is asked to call the West Caldwell Police at 973-226-4114.

There are multiple reports of a black man handing out bible church flyers in the parking lot during those same hours. Will patch be reporting that?

This is quite bold and takes a lot of brass to pull off a stunt like this at this time of day in broad daylight.Especially when people are in and out of the lot all the time! The police cannot be everywhere at once-they know this too! With the pool situated near 3 or 4 fast moving roads it's only minutes to I-280 or I-80 where now they blend in for a quick trip back to the inner city.It may get to the point where parking lots at various venues hire a highly visible security guard, then the criminals will decide to move on to other locations, hopefully where they may be apprehended by the the police. Why would you leave your pocketbook in visable sight? Ever heard of your trunk? Why wouldn't you cover it up or put something over it? Sounds like they were asking for trouble. Serves them right! Sounds like a dumb move to me. It's like putting a carrot in front of a bunny. Smarten up ladies!!!

Another reason why I like to see the cops pulling over "out of towners". A nice day at the pool turns into a nighmare.. Not only that someone has your personal information, but the hassle of new drivers lic and all the other things that go along with it.

Pull them over because they are "out of towners"? Are you serious? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Why dont you just say what you really mean?

Wow! Talk about racial profiling. I'm embarrassed to see the finger pointing right out of the gate! It could have been anyone! How do you know it wasn't one of your own friends. Oh yeah that's right, you're above that, but you were stupid enough to leave your handbags in full view. Maybe you should look and see who your neighbors are. Out of sight IS out of mind. The way I see it you asked for it, own it and move on. Now you can all car pool to motor vehicle for new licenses. Hopefully you haven't lost your identity, and now they know where you live, what your children's names are, and what they look like, your credit card numbers etc. and you don't know who to trust. Enjoy the rest of the summer at the pool.

The facts thus far. A black man was spotted in the parking lot handing out flyers. He only placed them on the cars that were not in plain view (ie on the perimeter or on the hill). This occurred at the same time that the cars were robbed. This is either one heck of a coincidence or he was involved as a lookout or similar. I wonder how the WCPD interview went? We're u involved in the crime? No, I swear. Ok then, you're off the hook.

Race is only reported when a white person robs a black person.

Was it the fact that he stood out because he was black? So there was NO ONE else spotted in the parking lot during 1:45 and 3:15 no one! That's incredible! Interesting that the police already cleared the person handing out the fliers. Sounds like an inside job to me. No tanned person, no Mexican, no Italian, no Caucasian, only the BLACK man. if he placed them on the cars not in plain view than how did you see him. I'm just amazed that you are quick to judge and hang a person who the police dept. gave a permit to as guilty ecause the color of his skin. Racial profiling at its best!!!

I wasn't at the pool but many of my friends were. None of the cars on the hill and none of the cars on the far left side had flyers both of these areas are at least partially visible from inside the pool area. The center aisles (cars acing each other) had flyers. That has to be somewhat of an amazing coincidence.
As far as the WCPD, I am not all all impressed wi their investigative prowess.

"u" is properly spelled out as "you". As for "Im", I believe you should have typed "I'm". Finally, the correct spelling is GRAMMAR.

How about a quick proof read before you press "enter"?

Wow...xenophobia is rising in West Caldwell. This is a case of women's purses being robbed and not put the blame on a black man -who happens to be in the vicinity of the incident. I am very sorry to hear about this incident. It is an awful experience being robbed. I had my purse stolen a few years ago by a man who was white-OMG did I just say that? After reading some of your replies, I almost believed that robberies was just a "black man" thing. Silly me!

The point was Dan, in case you didn't get it, was that busy bee was very critical of others, and she herself had poor grammer. I make mistakes, therefore do not crtiticize others. As for you, I know your perfect, but your posts are usually wrong. I just found the one of you saying Ned Gladstein bought the Taco Bell property. That is false.

Thanks Kevin for identifying the true issue here...a poster typing (probably) on an iPhone made some typographical errors. I'm sure we can all sleep better now.

Did the police already drop the investigation? HAs the police chief made any kind of statement? Is the Town council requiring the chief to address citizens concerns via a statement? Is there any accountability in the police dept? Doesn't the chief work for the Town Council?

I am not buying that the person putting flyers on the cars is not connected somehow to this event..

My car was parked in plain view of the ladies who were sitting at the gate checking badges,on the left hand side(leaving the pool area). I had a flyer on my car, and the cars that were robbed we're right across from mine, on the right hand side(leaving the pool area). All of the cars involved had their windows busted. Strange how the badge checkers didn't hear anything.

With all the noise at the pool there is no way the ladies at the gate can hear that. Did the alarms go off on the car's?

I don't know if the alarms went off. I know it's noisy there, but since they're so close to the exit and the cars weren't that far i thought they would have heard something.

The women who check badges are not security guards. They are there to make sure only members and their guests use the pool. They are not there to watch your cars.

All I said was I'm surprised they didn't hear the sound of glass breaking on four cars.
I'm not blaming or accusing them of anything.

Hey people instead of letting your racism scream out here, why not use an ounce of prevention and not leave valuables in plain view. And quite honestly, do you really think a BLACK man, as you put it, would be smashing windows in the middle of the day in milk toast Caldwell?

E.D.: I just felt i had address your prior comments;"They got what they deserved, serves them right"have you no heart or sympathy for someone who has been a victim? So the bags were left on the front seat-this may have been foolish, but a crime has been clearly committed. When crimes happen,in this case these crimes created direct victims-do not be so vicious, these ladies made a mistake, small at that as when they came out to return home the bags still should have been there!Secondly,"Maybe one of your neighbors or friends could have done it" Do you know how foolish and ridiculous this sounds,I know not which type of friends you associate with, however, not knowing any of the victims,I would give you odds that they do not associate with anyone that breaks into vehicles and steals the contents either.Bottom, line E.D. hope you never run into any adversity of any kind, any kind whatsoever you may find it very lonely trying to find some help or sympathy! Respectfully,Gregory L. Mitchell, West Caldwell
