Helicopters were flying over West Caldwell Wednesday night after an unknown incident in the township involving police from West Caldwell and Roseland that started at Walgreens.

Police cordoned off the drugstore parking lot at 601 Passaic Ave. following the incident.

When contacted about the incident, West Caldwell Police Chief Michael Bramhall referred all questions to officials from the Essex County Sheriff's Office.

Kevin Lynch, spokesman for the Essex County Sheriff's Office, was not available for comment.

Initial reports said one person was arrested, but officials believe one more person may possibly remain at large.

By 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, police were leaving the area.

Correction: The article originally stated the incident ended in the Walgreens parking lot.

Circulating rumors, accounts of police searches, and emergency radio broadcasts are reporting that the armed robbery occurred at the Walgreens drugstore before continuing in cars and on foot across Bloomfield Avenue into the neighborhoods surrounding Orton Road and Deerfield Road. An officer was also reportedly shot. The suspect being chased was described as a "black male adult 5'9" medium build, driving a Ford Explorer w/ new NY plates" (http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?ctid=1777).

Thats just wonderful. A possible armed fugitive in our neighborhoods and we are kept in the dark. The Caldwell police refused to answer any questions as well. WHAT IS THE BIG SECRET that trumps public safety?

Seriously, and they didn't use reverse 911 to alert anyone ! Is this not an emergency?

The police did an awesome job. They got the guy. At least one of them if there were more? I do not think anyone has any idea what they are going thru when the incident is happening. Hell why dont you just ask every officer to stop and knock on your doors and tell you what is happening while they are on the manhunt. Does anyone realize what a dispather goes thru when things like this are going on. Everyone of them including the dispatcher did a terrific job getting one more criminal off the streets or our towns.

I personally think we should have ordinance's that say the stores can not stay open 24 hours, more importantly the drug stores. These drug stores are getting hit more and more with the drug problems

Luckily we have libs to keep these degenerates out on the street and moving closer to nice neighborhoods. We need more affordable housing. CJ yes the police for the most part do a very good job for us, but the loser will be out on the street in a few days probably to murder someone next time.

Everyone suffers when you make an ordinance to prevent a business from providing a valuable service in the middle of the night. We always make laws that hurt the good guy, how about we start frying up some criminals? you will see a drop in crime and our children will be allowed to play out on the streets like the good ol' days.

Michael. I have lived in this town for over 50 years. They never had these drug stores open 24 hours and we survived. Walgreens was not open 24 hours when it was near Stop and Shop.
Get your prescription filled before 10 or 11 pm or the next day. How about the poor guy that got killed in Roseland at Quick Check. These places are all a criminals dream. How about the drug store in Long Island that the poor people were all shot because the guy needed his drugs. How many people work in these stores at night. I would never want to work in them overnight.
I disagree that these merchants need to make their money. AT what cost to their employees?

I heard the sirens shortly after 9 p.m. This has nothing to do with the store being open 24 hours. Can you name a single incident of a business open 24 hours in the Caldwells being robbed in the wee hours?

CJ I understand that you are against big corporation and them wanting to make money and provide a service, but that has nothing to do with criminals roaming the streets, fry them like some fresh cut bacon, and you wont have to worry about walking down the street no matter what time you choose to walk, wether it be 8am or 8pm, once again, you choose to punish the good to supposedly prevent the bad it never works that way, the bad just move on to another good to destroy. You must eliminate the bad so that good may prosper. This is just another example of wrong way, left turn thinking. Come to the right my friend, you will find logic and harmony.

Thanks Michael. I couldnt agree with you more. Get rid of criminals and we have no crime but that is not going to happen so I guess we just hope for the best.
