Once a year, the children at the Wednesday afternoon Youth Club program at First Presbyterian Church at Caldwell put their hands to labor.
In this case, it's a labor of community service and Christian giving. The children, with the help of adult volunteers, spend the afternoon bagging lunches that will be donated to the clients of St. John's Soup Kitchen in Newark.
This year, they made over 400 bologna sandwiches, packed 400 apples, 400 bags of cookies, and added 400 individual juice boxes. To make the lunches a little brighter, the children also added a handful of candy to each one.
As the afternoon progressed, volunteer Dave Johnson called out the number of bagged lunches completed until the children ran out of boxes and food. When it was done, they had made around 440 lunches for the clients in Newark.
Youth leader Amy Kolb led the children in song after the project was over. The Youth Club program has been making lunches for St. John's as an annual project for at least five years. The club is open to children in first through fifth grades.

What a wondeful project!
We will be collecting Frozen turkeys, turkey breasts and hams for St John's Soup Kitchen and some local families on Monday, April 2 from 8:30 until 5:30 PM in the vestibule of Trinity Academy behind St Aloysius Church. Please spread the word so we can continue to help feed the hungry. (pots of soup are made each day using the turkeys) Thank you!!
