This Weekend: Music, Poetry, and Shaved Heads

Weekend events in and around the Caldwells.

 

The Caldwells will be hopping with art and culture this weekend. Not to mention bald heads. In addition to musical performances of opera, cabaret, rock and roll, and Sinatra, St Baldrick’s will be shaving heads for charity, and a new treetop adventure course is opening. Sky Fitness is cutting the ribbon on their new gym.

Voices of Italy

Where/When: Caldwell College, 120 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell, Sunday at 3 p.m.

Why Go? Spend an afternoon enjoying a concert of opera arias, Neapolitan songs, and pop standards as performed by Micheal Castaldo, Annamaria Stefanelli and Rory Angelicola.

Pricing: $20—$35

St. Baldrick's at The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Club

Where/When: The Order of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, 648 Prospect Ave., West Orange; Saturday at 3 p.m.

Why Go? Are you brave enough to shave your head? If not, would you donate to see other people do it? Step up, because the cause is a worthy one: St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Food and drink will be served, and entertainment goes on until 8 p.m. At 3:30, the DeNogla School of Irish Step Dancing will perform. The head shaving begins at 4!

Pricing: Donations accepted.

The Stiff Joints to Play The Ringside Pub

Where/When: Ringside Pub, 379 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell; Saturday at 9 p.m.

Why Go? This hysterically named band is comprised of local parents from Livingston and West Orange on their “Back-to-School Tour.”  Expect a hot night of rock music, including covers of The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, The Black Crowes, Social Distortion, Everclear, Radio Head, The Doors, John Mellencamp, Jimi Hendrix and more.

Pricing: $5 cover charge

Cabaret 2011: Love Makes the World Go Round

Where/When: First Presbyterian Church at Caldwell, 326 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell; Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m.

Why Go? Enjoy a musical revue of Broadway show tunes that all center on the theme of "love" as performed by an ensemble of 18 singers and dancers with a stage band. All performers are members of the church’s Westminster Choir under the direction of Adriana Piercy.  Proceeds will benefit The Sara Jane Hussey Memorial Fund which provides scholarships for choir tours and funds other youth choir activities.

Pricing: $10 donation at the door  

"Sinatra: Time After Time "

Where/When: West Caldwell Public Library, 30 Clinton Road, West Caldwell; Sunday at 2 p.m.

Why Go? Actress, singer and dancer Karen Luscha will perform a concert of Frank Sinatra's classic hits, such as "Come Fly with Me," "Young at Heart," "My Funny Valentine," "Call Me Irresponsible," "Just in Time," "I'll Never Smile Again" and "The Second Time Around." The concert is sponsored by the Friends of the West Caldwell Public Library.

Pricing: Free, but advance registration is required.  

The Essex County Treetop Adventure Course Opens

Where/When: Turtleback Zoo, 560 Northfield Ave., West Orange; Saturday at 10 a.m.

Why Go?  Zip down trees. Traverse rope ladders. Climb. Swing. Test your skills. No jungle is required—this all happens right at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange when the new Essex County Treetop Adventure Course opens on Saturday. You must be at least 54” tall and no more than 250 lbs. to use the course.

Pricing: $20  

Music Together Presents: Families Singing for Families

Where/When: Caldwell United Methodist Church, 8 Academy Road, Caldwell; Sunday at 2 and 4 p.m.

Why Go? The Music Together Band and special guest, Music Together CD recording artist “Uncle Gerry” Dignan, will perform family-friendly music to benefit Save the Children's emergency funds. Music Together is an internationally recognized, developmentally appropriate, early-childhood music program for children from birth through age 7.

Pricing: $10 per person and $25 per family in advance, and $12 per person and $30 per family at the door.

Ribbon Cutting at Sky Fitness Club

Where/When: Sky Club Fitness, 750 Bloomfield Ave., West Caldwell; Saturday at 9 a.m.

Why Go? Sky Club Fitness will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate its official opening this weekend. West Caldwell Mayor Joseph Tempesta, Jr., will be in attendance. Come out and welcome the newest fitness club to town!

Tiferet Journal Poets to Read at Fieldhouse Pub

Where/When: Fieldhouse Pub, 31 Passaic Ave., Fairfield; Sunday at 3 p.m.

Why Go? Four New Jersey poets whose work have appeared in Tiferet Journal, including West Caldwell resident Diane Lockward, will read from the publication and their other works. There will be an open reading at the conclusion.
