Letter: Vandalism at Grover Cleveland Park

The letter submitted by the Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy states "vandalism is impacting the safety and beauty of the park."

An ongoing problem at Grover Cleveland Park, during the day and night, is the vandalism throughout the park especially in the playground and picnic area. In the playground area the swings, the slide and the synthetic surface are damaged and have been replaced before. The water fountains are often filled with dirt and are currently not functioning. The port-a-johns have been knocked over and the doors have been broken. There have been many light bulbs and globes on the paths of the park that have been broken.

Unfortunately, the vandalism is impacting the safety and beauty of the park.

The park is closed from 10 p.m. to dawn.

Attn Caldwell PD!! Are you awake? I know it is a County Park, but you can still patrol every once in a while...especially at night.

There's a group of 11-13 year old boys that have been going around vandalizing town lately. They have slashed several tires along bloomfield avenue and are a constant menace to the tenants and businesses there.

The picnic area is often frequented by a group of teenage boys smoking pot. I'm not saying they are responsible for the vandalism, but it is another example of illegal activity taking place in the park.

MFL
How about getting the citizens of Caldwell/West Caldwell to patrol the park darning the night. With the guidance, and supervision of the Two Police Departments, or the Essex County Sheriff Department we can form several patrols, We can establish teams of 2 or three citizens on a schedule / shifts every night of the week. The park can be divide in section for the top and lower levels. I am sure we can get enough volunteers in the community. I am sure the business community would contribute, such as coffee, snacks, flash lights, etc. It would be good advertisement for them as well.
I will contact the Caldwell Police Department tomorrow, to find the proper way in how to proceed. I definitely would be a member of a patrol. Do I have any volunteers that would like to contribute to taking care of our community park. Please let me know and we can hold a meeting.

I talked with the Caldwell Police Chief and he is willing to work with the community. What I am surprise is that there were no additional comments... where is the community... MFL
