Caldwell High Students Take Part in Chemistry Olympics

Sixteen local students competed in the annual competition at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Students from James Caldwell High School placed in The North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society-Teacher Affiliates annual Chemistry Olympics last month.

Sixteen local students competed against 26 teams from 18 New Jersey high schools at event, which was held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, in Newark, on May 16.

Led by chemistry teacher Marcia Renzetti, physics teacher and Science and Technology Club adviser Robert Dubas, students from James Caldwell High School participated in a series of chemistry challenges, web page design, a chemical nomenclature test and a variety of lab activities.

James Caldwell High School sent two teams to compete in the annual event, with both teams earning several second, third and fourth place finishes.

In the "Colorimetric Experiment: Percent of Copper in Brass," junior Christopher Lim and senior Samantha Weckenman placed second.

In the "Nomenclature Competition," seniors Corinne Cannavale and Sean Buckley, and junior Lior Idan placed third.

In "Information Search," the "Chemical Tretinoin," senior Katherine Aliotta, and juniors Iris Cai and So Yi Lam earned fourth place.

Team A placed ninth overall and was comprised of seniors Ryan Acocella, Katherine Aliotta, and Samuel Kim; juniors Erika Axe, Steve Brown, Cai, Brendan Cullinane, So Yi Lam, Paige Mitstifer, and Marie-Lys Mollet; and sophomores Samantha Chang and Harjot Sidhu.

Other local high school students participating in the competition were seniors William Bartlett, Buckley, Charlyne Burki, Cannavale, Ethan Meth and Weckenman; juniors Idan, Lim, Peter Shultz, Drew Siedel, and Taryn Urban; and sophomore Connor Acocella.
