It's Not Too Late to Start Training for Spring Races

Even if you have never run before, this plan can help you pace yourself to make it across the finish line.

If you are feeling more tired than usual, think about how active you have been lately. Sometimes fatigue can be caused by lack of activity.

As we all know, getting started is the hardest part. Having a specific goal can be the perfect motivation.

Running 4 Answers (www.running4answers.org), benefitting Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (www.curealzfund.org), is scheduled for Saturday, April 2, in Roseland. This event has two options: a 4-mile race and a 2-mile fun run/fitness walk.

April 2 is about eight weeks away. Even if you haven’t ever been in a race before, with some planning, you can be ready to participate in one of the events.

The four-mile race is on a USATF-NJ certified course and is part of the Grand Prix series (500 points).

The two-mile fun run is a new addition this year. It was added to encourage those who are not quite ready for a 5K (3.1 miles) and is great practice for “the real thing.” (Also, because Running 4 Answers is so early in the spring, your race season will be off to a great start.)

The attached training plan can help (see PDF). Either on a treadmill or outside, interval training “mixes it up,” providing an option to “steady state” jogging, which can get boring.

Ask yourself, “Can I jog a minute and a half?” Chances are, at the right pace, you can. (If you are unable, try walking fast for a minute and a half, and then at a slower pace for the “rest” period.) That’s all it takes to begin training.*

I was once taught that it takes three weeks to form a habit. During the next three weeks, commit yourself to following the training plan. Pay attention to how you feel after you are done. While the first couple of times may be difficult, you may also notice things like: you are sleeping better at night, have more energy during the day and/or you are generally just in a better mood.

Following Running 4 Answers, our area has additional races/walks benefitting other worthy causes.
