Firefighters Face Off in Annual Turkey Bowl
Caldwell and West Caldwell Volunteer fire departments play friendly football game on Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Members of the Caldwell and West Caldwell Volunteer Fire Departments met at the Kiwanis Oval to participate in their yearly "Turkey Bowl."
Held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, this 10-plus year tradition has grown from a few members getting together for some fun recreation on a cool November morning, to an organized touch football game at the Oval in Caldwell, complete with a scorekeeper. Several fans rotate in and endure the cold to catch a glimpse of who may have the upper hand this year in the friendly game.
The game is traditionally followed by a turkey fry at the fire headquarters of either Caldwell or West Caldwell. Caldwell held the honors after this year's game, as several players and fans waited anxiously to get a bit of the turkey, donated this year by Vila Meats, and various other traditional Thanksgiving dishes brought by participants and fans.
Though West Caldwell came in victorious in this contest, the game was hard fought and highlighted by several big plays on both sides, including two 40-plus yard passing TDs for Caldwell, and another long bomb pass play early in the second half for West Caldwell.
Save the date and come cheer on local firefighters at next year's Turkey Bowl: Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013!
