Exercise and Eating Well Can Help Stave off Alzheimer’s Disease

Six weeks to go to Running 4 Answers 4-mile race in Roseland and Essex Fells.

So you’ve started training … walking, jogging or running three times a week. That’s great! How are you feeling? Do you have more energy during the day? Are you sleeping better? Hopefully you are noticing a difference. Here’s the hard part: continuing!

Keeping motivated can be tough. Buying a new workout outfit can be a fun way!  Another way is to train for a specific event. Having a set date “out there” gives purpose to the workouts.

Participating in an event that benefits a cause can be a motivator, too. In the case of Running 4 Answers (www.running4answers.org), its purpose is to raise awareness of and money for Alzheimer’s Disease research. If you know someone affected by Alzheimer’s, you know how truly devastating it is not only to the patient, but to the family, as well.

Regular exercise can benefit you in so many ways. Research has shown that regular exercise and eating well can help stave off Alzheimer’s – not forever – but can help delay its effects. We have all read that eating more fruits, vegetables, and fish can make a difference in your overall health … and specifically in fighting Alzheimer’s.

I am not a chef, nor am I a nutritionist, but here is the easiest way I know how to prepare salmon … and also the way my family likes it best:

I use salmon fillets, drizzle olive oil on them and sprinkle lemon-pepper seasoning on them. I bake it in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish (be careful not to overcook) and serve it with rice and a vegetable. On a busy weeknight, this meal is done within 20 minutes and is incredibly good for you.

At this time, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. Running 4 Answers exists to raise money for the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (www.curealzfund.org). Their mission is to fund research to find the cause and a cure for this disease, which currently affects 5.4 million Americans. Please consider participating in our race, fun run/fitness walk, donating or sponsoring this worthy cause.
