Comeback Kids Awarded by N. Caldwell Council
Players and coaches of the 5 - 6th grade and 7 - 8th grade baseball teams were recognized for their outstanding achievements this season.
The mayor and Borough of North Caldwell Council formally recognized the success of the town’s two middle school baseball championship teams at their bi-weekly meeting Tuesday night.
The 5th and 6th grade team finished their regular season with an impressive 7 – 2 record. Their season was capped off with three playoff wins, including the league championship game where they came back from several runs down in the fifth inning to triumph over the number one ranked team.
Mayor Joseph Alessi said their win was a “surprise ending” to a script you could never sell in Hollywood.
The 7th and 8th grade team took a much different route to their title, in what the mayor called “the sequel to the first movie.” The team didn’t win a game until their last of the regular season, finishing with a dismal 1 – 7 record – the worst in their six-team league.
The 7th and 8th graders didn’t lose again, though. Winning each of their playoff games by one run, they took the championship back to North Caldwell.
“It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish,” added Alessi, before arranging photo opportunities with the players and coaches, who were presented with certificates of achievement from the council.
