Chiefs Softball Putting Aside 2010

Caldwell lacrosse teams on fire to start '11.

Caldwell's softball team had a very un-Chiefs season in 2010.

In the last decade, Caldwell has been known for having championship seasons, but went through a tough transition with the new Super Essex Conference and finished with a 6-17 record.

While the Chiefs lost their first game of the season 4-2 at Cedar Grove last Monday, they won the next three and are 4-1. With their four wins, the Chiefs have been putting it all together, outscoring opponents 41-4.

In the 4-2 win over Governor Livingston on the road on April 9, Caldwell beat a team that was undefeated coming into the battle.

The game was tied at two in the sixth inning when both Chelsea Columbo and Gabby Roselle made some key hits to score runs and give Caldwell the two-run lead.

Chiefs pitcher Brittany Trivino would shut down the Highlanders in the last two innings to get the victory. Trivino scattered six hits while striking out six in the independent battle.

In addition to Columbo and Roselle, Alexa Sciacca contributed offensively going 2-for-3. Both Brittany and Carleigh Trivino also had a pair of base hits. Brittany Trivino collected a pair of RBIs in the game.

On April 8, Caldwell pounded Boonton on the road to the tune of a 10-1 victory. Boonton actually was ahead 1-0 after the first inning, but the Chiefs would take it from there.

Jennifer Toron and Roselle went 3-for-4 on the day. Toron had a pair of RBIs while smacking a triple and a double. Roselle collected a pair of doubles. Sciacca also went 2-for-3, including scoring a run along with a pair of RBIs.

Trivino fired a one-hitter against Boonton and struck out 11 to get the win in the circle.

Boys Lacrosse (3-0)

Another Caldwell team that is excelling to start the 2011 season is the Chiefs boys lacrosse. The team raised its record to 3-0 as Caldwell dispatched Columbia, 12-6, when the Chiefs took control in the third quarter.

Bill Pierce had a big game against the Columbia defense with a pair of goals and three helpers in the contest on April 7. Chris Lawshe had a hat trick to lead Caldwell in scoring. Anthony Maddaloni was the other Chiefs scorer to have multiple goals with two. Yago Ferreira made nine saves to get the victory in goal.

Girls Lacrosse (3-0)

Caldwell found out they are the fifth seed in the Essex County Tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded Millburn on April 23. A victory over the Millers could set up a battle at top-seeded Glen Ridge, the defending ECT champion, on April 30 in the semi-finals.

West Essex, the Chiefs neighborhood rival, is the second seed in the county tourney. The pair would only face each other if they both make the county title game.

The Chiefs already have half the number of wins they had in 2010. Caldwell raised its record to 3-0 after a 19-6 win over Morristown on April 7. In 2010, Caldwell finished with a 6-13 record.

In the win over Morristown, Katie Nespo added three goals along with Conlon’s seven for the victory. Against Pequannock, Naspo led the way with five goals while Annie Mergner and Tierney Conlon chipped in three and two goals respectively.

Baseball (2-4)

Caldwell did not sit back and let Montclair run over them in the Super Essex Conference game on April 8.

The Chiefs were down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, but then their bats got moving with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.

Eric Barsanti led the way by going 2-for-3 on the day with three RBIs, including a triple. Sonny Puzzo also went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple. Taylor Reuter also had an RBI against the Mounties. Caldwell starting pitcher Connor Smith went the distance, scattering eight hits and striking out four.

As of last weekend the Chiefs were 2-4 in the early going of the season.

Caldwell had a tough time at the Krug Tournament in Millburn. The Chiefs were invited to the tournament by Millburn and proceeded to be nice guests as they lost 8-2 to the host Millers and 3-2 to Roselle Catholic on April 9.

Boys Tennis (2-0)

The Chiefs raised their record to 2-0 on the season as they defeated Nutley, 3-2, in a Super Essex Conference contest in West Caldwell on Monday.

It was a tough match for the Chiefs as three of the five matches had to go to the decisive third set. The Chiefs won two of three matches that went to the third set. Caldwell's Neil Shulman went down 7-6 in a tiebreaker in the first set to Raiders' Derek McMullen, but came back to win 6-1, 6-1 to take third singles.

The Chiefs Ethan Flint also rebounded to win his battle. Flint lost the first set to Nutley's Matthew Salerno, 6-3, only to turn the tables in the last two sets, 6-1, 6-3, to win first singles.

Chiefs Mike Melchione and Andrew Lucila swept Nutley's Ronald Ramirez and Kevin Robinson, 6-1, 6-0, to take first doubles.
