A Caldwell gas station has run out of fuel Wednesday afternoon after cars lined up all morning on Bloomfield Avenue to fill up tanks and gas cans.

A line of cars more than 50 long waited to fill up at the Gas Stop all morning, when area residents faced the possibility of a third night without power due to Hurricane Sandy.

The station at 450 Bloomfield Avenue was reported to be one of the few gas stations open in the area.

A gas station attendant said customers were allowed to fill up as much as they needed. He said he expected the station would run out of fuel at some point Wednesday if the high demand kept up.

At about 2:30 p.m., four orange cones placed in front of pumps indicated that the station was out of gasoline.

Earlier in the day, Maria Bermingham of Cedar Grove was about 20th in line.

Berhmingham said she was filling up gas cans for her father’s generator and for her own generator, which her husband purchased Wednesday morning to power their house. 

Gerald Lyons of Jersey City said he waited for 20 minutes to get gasoline for his Ford Taurus X. Lyons said he got on line in front of the Mary Ann Apartments on the 500 block of Bloomfield Avenue.

Other stations—including ones on the corner of Bloomfield and Passaic avenues in West Caldwell and one near the Willowbrook Mall on Route 46—were also open but with long lines, according to eyewitness reports.
