Caldwell Square Dancing Club to Hold Open House
Cross Trail Squares meet weekly at Grover Cleveland Middle School.
If you enjoy dancing, meeting new people or are a country mouse living in the suburbs, square dancing might be your calling.
The Caldwell Cross Trail Squares will hold their next open house on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. The square dancing club meets at Grover Cleveland Middle School in Caldwell.
Everyone is welcome to the free barn dance, which introduces potential dancers to square dancing. Singles, as well as couples, are welcome.
Thursday night classes from 7:30 to 9 p.m. will begin on Sept. 27 at the middle school.
Wayne Applegate, an experienced caller, will lead the weekly classes. The caller tells the dancers what to do next, and a newcomer can learn various steps in a few months.
After competing the classes, dancers can participate in square dancing all over Northern New Jersey, where there are about 20 clubs offering dances every night of the week.
Dancers can expect more than just country music. Square dancing is done to Broadway show tunes, movie themes, rock, classical, folk, and more.
“Many people use square dancing as a form of physical and mental exercise as well as a theme for vacation travel. There are square dance resorts, cruises, conventions, and ordinary clubs throughout the world, all of which provide ready-made camaraderie through sharing American-style square dancing in English,” according to a press release from the Cross Trail Squares.
