A controversial building in Caldwell will not be a church, nor a meeting hall nor a multi-family residential dwelling—all possibilities that upset neighbors concerned about lack of parking and congestion in their part of town.

Instead, the Borough of Caldwell plans to purchase the vacant Knights of Columbus Hall at 27 Personette St. using Green Acres funding.

At Tuesday night's council meeting, the council authorized $10,000 be sent to the the owner, the Columbian Club, as a deposit, according to Caldwelll Mayor Ann Dassing.

What the town will use the land for remains to be decided. 

The borough had about $300,000 of Green Acres funding to use or lose before the end of the year.

The Knights of Columbus Hall was listed by Gartland Realtors of Fairfield for $250,000, according to the New Jersey Multiple Listing Service. The lot size is 75' by 114'.

The hall has been on the market for more than two years. Earlier this year, plans for a church to buy and use the building were strongly opposed by neighbors in part because there is no parking on the property.
