BMW Stolen From 7-Eleven Lot in West Caldwell, Police Say

Driver apparently left the car running in the parking lot while he went inside early Friday.

A 20-year-old Fairfield resident's car was stolen Friday morning in West Caldwell after he apparently left it running in the 7-Eleven parking lot, police said.

The victim parked his 2008 BMW in the lot and left it running while he went into the Bloomfield Avenue convenience store at 12:30 a.m., police said.

When he left the store, the car was gone.

The incident is under investigation.

West Caldwell police were investigating a similar incident a few weeks ago in which a Lexus left warming up on a Sunnie Terrace driveway was reported stolen.

There have been a number of thefts involving cars left warming up in the Caldwells this winter.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the West Caldwell Police Department at 973-226-4114

My son and his wife live right next door in the SUNNYFIELD CONDOMINIUMS.There is a driveway exiting the units with large trees along the boundary, perfect for someone to hide behind just waiting for someone to pull in for a cup of coffee or something for next mornings breakfast.By the time the victim gets his items es pays his bill, the criminal or criminals dash around the fence and if the motorist does come out before the criminal reaches the car they only need pass by and enter the store with no one the wiser-a perfect set-up.This gets down to the point, that today we all carry cell phones if any one of us in our travels(night or day)sees anything that seems a bit out of order, use that phone and call the Police. They would rather respond to a false alarm than to have to deal with a crime after the fact. A few years ago you could leave your car running for days with no sign of theft (not that it was smart back then either) but Just put 2 and 2 together on this, its more than stealing cars, gang related activity is migrating under the radar and targeting our area. This is a criminal business that is building momentum in the works, all these cars are either getting chopped or shipped over seas..... somethings gotta be done cause what if everyone stops idling their cars.... these scumbag criminals will start finding new things to do... citizens and cops gotta work together on this.

So true Billy!!We had at one time,a "neighborhood watch" here in West Caldwell. In fact there was a sign so stating on our street(Farrington St.) but the sign is no longer there.I called the Police Dept.to inquire about the program several years ago and was told that the program had basically been discontinued due to good conditions with very little with the town experiencing very little crime-PERHAPS IT'S TIME TO START UP THE PROGRAM AGAIN!!
